There aren't many new things we'll be buying for our house. Like the title of the blog says - everything we'll be using to furnish our home will be old, used, secondhand, etc. The one thing we're absolutely desperate for though is a new bed. There's nothing really wrong with our mattress, it's only about 7yrs old (it's my Full from before we were married) but the bed itself is so old & makes a LOT of noise. I'll leave it to your imagination to determine how that could complicate some aspects of our life. ;) So that means we have to spring for a new one.
Luckily for us, Hubs and I don't really like sleeping in a King size bed. Every time we sleep in a King, whether it's in a hotel or a friends house. It never feels quite right. We're too far away from each other, we both feel like we're sleeping alone, despite the blankets our backs get cold with the distance between us, plus he's too far away for me to kick nudge him when he starts snoring. So a Queen size bed it is - which is good because the beds, mattresses and the sheets are a lot cheaper than for a King sized bed. We got a great deal on a mattress & box spring, so all we needed was the bed. And sorry to those loyal to only using a frame but I've always had a bed with a headboard & foot board and feel weird sleeping w/o them.
I have always wanted a sleigh bed. When we were little & all my friends were begging their parents for 4-poster beds or girly canopy beds, I wanted a big honkin' sleigh bed. They just look so awesome & cozy. My main problem is this: Sleigh beds are ESSPENSIVE!! (said like Rosie Perez - just cuz it's funnier that way).
I forget the name of the Ethan Allen bed that I always wanted (I wanna say it was in the Hemingway collection?? But they don't make it anymore so I can't find it). It just love the weight & elegant lines of sleigh beds.

Ethan Allen's new modern bed is called the Maison but at nearly $1900 pre-tax (which is still a steal for EA btw) it's just too much for our broke behinds. Plus, the stain is a little too light for me & at that price I'm not about to sand it down & re-finish it myself.

Most everyone has heard of Bob's Discount Furniture, right? We've all seen the annoying commercials? They have recently discontinued their original Louis bed so the older style is listed in their online discount section called The E-Pit. This is our cheapest option at $199. Now y'all know I'm all about the bargains but I'm also a big believer of, "Ya get what you pay for", so I'm too chicken to pull the trigger on this.

The newer model has a bit more detail in the woodwork and is still a good deal at $299, so we went to our local store to check it out. You can kinda tell that it's made of cheaper wood product & that it's a budget piece, but it's still pretty sturdy. It wouldn't be a bad compromise but I also wouldn't expect it to last very long. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about Bob's furniture. Some people love it & some people really hate it. Having never bought anything from there, I really can't say. But dayum, they do have great prices.

Another option is Ashley Furniture's Janel Sleigh bed. It's got a darker color than the Bob's version and they basically price match to what Bob's charges, so this one is $289. Only did you know that most bed prices only include the price of the headboard & footboard?? Yeah, the wooden side pieces are extra. And Ashley's delivery price is more, so we have to take that into account too. But they do have better customer service, and a warranty, etc.

Last year Hubs and I visited the Raymour & Flanigan near us. We'd been a couple times before and had never been really impressed with the design of any of their pieces and the prices certainly weren't in our range. We wrote it off as a lost cause. Then one day last week when we thought we were going to close - just for S's & G's we stopped in to check it out. They had just gone through a renovation and had all new furniture in their showroom. We even found a bed that we liked (and a couch too, but that's a whole 'nother post). It was solid wood, so the quality was a lot better than the other beds we had seen in our range, the finish had a richer, deeper color and overall it just looked like a better piece that'll last a very long time. It's a classic sleigh bed and I loved it right away. It's from their "Richmond" collection and it runs about $500. That's more than double the Bob's sale price so I keep going back & forth in my head trying to justify spending that.

I know I shouldn't be looking at pics from BH&G, especially when we're on a strict budget but I just can't help it. This is a little too much pink for me, but I still love it.

I wish you lived around here... I work for a mattress company. That's how I got my mattress for $100 and then my parents got a sleigh type bed for free b/c it was used at a trade show and then they can't do anything with them so they gave it away. That's also how I got my futon I finally gave away :) My mom is the tradeshow director so she's in on all that stuff.
ReplyDelete#1 - You make me laugh.
ReplyDelete#2 - Do NOT put a skirt on a sleigh bed - I just saw that Ashley one and I gasped, ugly.
#3 - I think that if you've always slept with a footboard and love the sleigh bed, you should stick with it. Don't let pinterest play with your heart like that!
#4 - Sara is amazing. She should make one of those for you because you're adorable.
I prefer queen beds for the same reason as you. :) Good luck with your sleigh bed search! We have an upholstered headboard (that my mom made for us...she does freelance interior design). I don't sleep with wet hair, but as long as your head goes on your pillow and not against the headboard itself, I don't think it will be a problem.
ReplyDeleteOMG. First. For some reason, even though I'm a follower my google reader was NOT giving me your blog. Dislike. Ugh. Fixed it though. :)
ReplyDeleteSecond - do the R&F bed. It's more money, but it's real wood, and actually, I think it might be my favorite of all of htem.
Haha! we just bought a sleigh bed for our home and actually looked at most of the same selections above! We actually have the Thomasville Hemingway sleigh bed (I think maybe you're thinking Thomasville Hemingway..not Ethan Allan?) Yes, it was a lot of $ but we were looking at is as a purchase for life...we don't plan on ever buying a new bed again and so we were wiling to make the investment. We were looking at the R&F bed for awhile though and I really really liked that one!
ReplyDeleteThe sleigh beds do have a really nice look to them. The one with the extra detailing in the panel reminds me of our bed...which is white and a king and cost an arm and a leg. But, we bought a whole bedroom suite at the same time. I would definitely worry about the $199 cheapo store bed. Why not buy it again if you don't have to? You do sorta get what you paid for. I'd go with the Ashley at least, although you didn't say how much the side boards are. You should try to get real wood if you can. Or the R& L. Hubby wanted a King so a King we got.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what to tell you to do about the bed.
ReplyDeleteBut I wanted to say hi :)
I have a draft post about how we slept in King beds all summer in hotels for weddings and HATED IT! A bunch of people I've talked to totally disagree, I'm glad you and Dan are the same way! King is so far away. We were happy in my Full but upgraded to a queen and it's perfect. Enough room for when one of us is sick or hot but can still stick out an arm and reach the other person. :)
